The Kofi Annan NextGen Democracy Prize 2026 is awarded annually to an exceptional young leader aged between 18 and 30. The prize is presented at the Athens Democracy Forum, a global gathering of influential leaders, thinkers, and activists committed to advancing democratic governance.

This initiative continues the legacy of Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the United Nations, who strongly believed in the role of young people in building inclusive and resilient democratic societies.

Eligibility Criteria for Kofi Annan NextGen Democracy Prize 2026

To apply for the Kofi Annan NextGen Democracy Prize 2026, applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Be between 18 and 30 years old at the time of application
• Demonstrate strong leadership ability
• Be willing to participate in global events such as the Athens Democracy Forum and One Young World Summit
• Submit a short video explaining your work in defending democracy and your motivation
• Submit the application in English
• Provide a signed letter of support from a recognised organisation in the democracy or human rights field

Requirements for the Letter of Support

The referee must:

• State their full name, organisation, and position
• Explain their relationship with you and how long they have known you
• Describe your role and contributions
• Clearly explain how your work supports and advances democracy
• Write the letter in English

Evaluation Criteria

Applications for the Kofi Annan NextGen Democracy Prize 2026 will be reviewed by an independent panel based on the following:

   Evidence of measurable results such as policy influence, civic engagement, or outreach
