Small Mammal Conservation Organization (SMACON) is seeking dedicated Field Officers/Coordinators to join our team in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Founded in 2016 amidst the Afi Mountains Wildlife Sanctuary, SMACON was established to address the critical gap in conservation efforts for small-bodied mammals, particularly bats, which were disproportionately hunted despite the area’s protected status. We are passionate about ensuring all species receive the protection they deserve and are looking for individuals who share this commitment.

Job Overview

The Field Officer/Coordinator will play a vital role in implementing SMACON’s conservation projects on the ground. This position involves extensive fieldwork, community engagement, and data collection to support the protection and research of small mammal populations in Malaysia.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct field surveys and research on small mammal populations, with a focus on bats.
  • Implement conservation strategies and action plans.
  • Engage with local communities to raise awareness and promote sustainable practices.
  • Monitor wildlife populations and habitat conditions.
  • Collect, analyze, and report on field data.
  • Assist in the development and execution of project proposals and reports.
  • Coordinate with local stakeholders, government agencies, and other conservation partners.
  • Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Zoology, Environmental Science, Conservation, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in fieldwork, preferably in wildlife research or conservation.
  • Strong understanding of ecological principles and small mammal identification.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and community engagement skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in remote field conditions.
  • Proficiency in data collection and basic analysis.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel extensively within Malaysia.
