Job Description
The Yale Young African Scholars Program is a highly competitive academic and leadership initiative created for outstanding African secondary school students. The program supports young scholars who plan to pursue higher education and aspire to become influential leaders across Africa. Participants benefit from advanced academic training, university admission guidance, and access to a powerful network of peers and mentors from across the continent.
Students will develop critical academic and leadership skills, receive expert advice on university applications and career pathways, and gain mentorship that continues throughout the university admission process. Applicants may select their preferred session on the application form but can attend only one program session.

Eligibility Requirements
- To qualify for the Yale Young African Scholars Program, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Students must be between 14 and 18 years old during the 2026 program dates. This means applicants should be born between 18 August 2008 and 16 July 2012.
- Applicants must be able to participate fully in an intensive academic curriculum that is taught in English.
- Candidates must be citizens or permanent residents of an African country. Refugees currently living in an African country are also encouraged to apply.
- Students must be enrolled in a secondary school within an African country.
- Applicants should currently be in the 10th or 11th grade, or the equivalent level in their country’s education system.
Scholarship Benefits
- The program is completely free for all selected students, ensuring access for participants from every financial background.
- The YYAS Summit has no tuition fees and provides free housing, meals, and academic curriculum materials for the full duration of the program.
- Participants will also be matched with mentors after completing the program, offering long-term support for university and financial aid applications.
Program Duration
YYAS Online College Prep Workshop
16th July to 21st July 2026
This is a six-day online academic preparation session.
YYAS Residential Leadership Summit in Kenya
8th August to 16th August 2026
This is a nine-day, fully sponsored in-person leadership and academic program.
Required Application Documents
- Applicants must submit an activities list that highlights their academic and leadership experiences.
- A 400-word essay and an additional 200-word written response are required as part of the application.
- Students must provide two short “fast take” responses, each limited to 280 characters.
- An official school transcript must be uploaded with the application.
- One recommender is required. The recommender must complete the official YYGS Recommendation Form.
- Applicants are expected to pay the application fee. The fee is $70 for Early Action and $85 for Regular Decision.
- To complete the application, students must click the “Submit Application” button on the review page.
- Optional documents include English proficiency test scores such as TOEFL or Duolingo, and a request for need-based financial aid.
