The University of Galway is inviting applications for the 2026 Hardiman PhD Scholarships, a fully funded doctoral funding scheme for high-achieving candidates worldwide who want to engage in curiosity-driven research and make a societal impact.
Scholarship Overview
Level – PhD (Structured doctoral programme)

Who Should Apply (Eligibility Criteria)
Applicants should:
- Be eligible to start a full-time PhD at University of Galway in September 2026.
- Hold a first degree or relevant prior degree with high academic standing (e.g. first class or upper-second class honours or equivalent).
- Not already be registered as a PhD student nor previously hold a PhD.
- Meet the English language and other entry requirements of University of Galway.
The Hardiman Scholarships welcome applicants from all disciplines across the university’s four academic colleges — including Arts & Humanities, Sciences, Social Sciences, Engineering, Medicine, and more.

Application Process & Requirements
- Find a PhD Supervisor
- Applicants must nominate a supervisor at University of Galway.
- The supervisor must submit a Supervisor Form by the application deadline.
- Submit Your Scholarship Application
- Applications must be completed and submitted by 6 February 2026, 17:00 (Irish Time).
- Applications may be submitted in English or Irish.
- Provide Academic References
- Two academic reference forms must be completed and submitted by the same deadline.
A complete application typically includes- personal information, proposed research proposal or statement, supervisor nomination, references, and proof of prior qualifications (transcripts, degree certificates, language proficiency where required).
