International Alert Nigeria is seeking an experienced Country Finance Manager in Abuja to lead the country’s finance function and provide strategic oversight for financial planning, reporting, compliance, and sustainability. This role offers an opportunity to manage a dynamic finance team, ensure accurate financial stewardship, and support the delivery of peacebuilding and conflict prevention programs across Nigeria.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in finance and accounting within international NGOs, exceptional leadership skills, and a deep understanding of donor compliance and statutory financial regulations in Nigeria.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management and Oversight

  • Lead all financial planning, reporting, and internal control activities for International Alert Nigeria
  • Maintain compliance with Nigerian laws and International Alert global policies and procedures
  • Ensure accurate and timely donor financial reporting, including forecasts, projections, and grant management
  • Oversee the use of Microsoft Business Central (Dynamics 365) for accounting and reporting purposes
  • Establish and maintain efficient financial processes and internal controls to mitigate risk
  • Monitor cash and bank accounts, authorize expenditures, and manage office accounts in line with procurement guidelines
  • Ensure monthly financial reports, expenditure forecasts, and cash-flow projections are produced on time
  • Administer tax obligations and statutory payments according to Nigerian regulations

Budgeting and Strategic Advice

  • Develop, review, and maintain the Nigeria Country Budget, identifying funding gaps and proposing solutions
  • Support Senior Management Team (SMT) and Project Managers in interpreting financial information for decision-making
  • Provide expert financial advice, analysis, and reports to the Country Director, SMT, and budget-holders
  • Assist in developing new project budgets and assess organizational capacity to meet financial obligations

Team Leadership and Capacity Building

  • Directly supervise Finance Officers and support capacity development across the finance team
  • Provide financial training and induction for country staff on systems and procedures
  • Work with NGO partners to strengthen their financial management systems and reporting
  • Liaise with Finance Business Partners, International Accountants, and the London Finance Team for seamless operations

Compliance, Audits, and Risk Management

  • Act as focal point for internal and external audits, providing documentation and support
  • Ensure financial operations comply with national and donor statutory requirements
  • Monitor and manage financial risks and internal controls effectively
  • Participate in investigations of fraud or irregularities when required

Representation and Contribution

  • Contribute to Alert Nigeria’s Country Strategy and participate in SMT discussions
  • Represent International Alert at conferences, seminars, and donor meetings when delegated
  • Support donor liaison and fundraising initiatives by providing financial insights
  • Participate in organization-wide knowledge management and communication efforts

Travel Requirements

  • The role is based in Abuja, Nigeria, with regular travel to field offices and partner locations across the country

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field
  • At least 10 years of experience in senior financial roles, with a minimum of 5 years in management positions
  • Extensive experience in grants management and compliance with major donors such as USAID, FCDO, EC, UNDP, GIZ, and others
  • Strong knowledge of financial processes, internal controls, risk management, and statutory compliance in Nigeria
  • Proven experience in financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and accounting operations
  • Excellent leadership, strategic, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and accounting software; experience with Microsoft Business Central (Dynamics 365) is desirable

Desirable Skills

  • Professional accounting qualifications (ICAN, ANAN, ACCA – part-qualified acceptable)
  • Experience managing remote staff
  • Demonstrated ability to work in multi-cultural, partnership-driven environments
