Applications are now open for the 2026 European Parliament Sakharov Fellowship, a prestigious programme designed for human rights defenders from non-EU countries. The fellowship provides a two-week intensive training in Brussels and another EU Member State, offering participants a unique opportunity to gain first-hand insight into European human rights mechanisms and advocacy practices.

Since 2016, the Sakharov Fellowship has empowered human rights defenders, helping them strengthen their impact through training, networking, and practical tools.

Program Overview

The Sakharov Fellowship 2026 includes:

  • Two-week intensive training: Sessions in Brussels and an additional EU Member State.
  • EU Policy Induction: Insights into European Parliament and EU mechanisms supporting human rights.
  • Workshops: Topics cover advocacy and communication, security and safety, resilience and well-being, disinformation, and documentation of human rights violations.
  • Networking & Advocacy: Opportunities to meet Members of the European Parliament, EU officials, and human rights experts, while engaging in individual advocacy projects.

Eligibility

  • Open to human rights defenders from non-EU countries.
  • Proven record in campaigning for human rights through an NGO, organization, or individual initiatives.
  • High proficiency in English, sufficient for active participation in the programme.
  • Selection aims for gender balance and representation across diverse human rights issues and geographical regions, aligned with European Parliament priorities.
