Applications are now open for the James McCune Smith PhD Scholarships 2026/27, a fully funded doctoral scholarship programme at the University of Glasgow. This initiative is designed to support Black UK-domiciled students to pursue PhD research across any academic discipline where appropriate supervision is available.

The scholarship goes beyond funding by offering an enhanced doctoral experience focused on leadership development, mentoring, professional placements, and career readiness both within and beyond academia.

About the Scholarship

The James McCune Smith PhD Scholarships support doctoral research in all disciplines, including creative practice-based research. Scholars benefit from a holistic programme that combines academic excellence with professional development, community building, and exposure to diverse career pathways.

Funding and Duration

Successful candidates will receive comprehensive funding for up to four years, including:

  • Full PhD tuition fees covered
  • Annual living stipend (estimated at £19,795 for 2025 entry)
  • Annual £3,000 training grant to support research, skills development, and professional activities

What the Scholarship Offers

In addition to financial support, scholars will benefit from:

  • A six-month external placement with an industry, government, NGO, or other external organisation
  • Dedicated mentorship from professionals outside academia, alongside academic supervision
  • Leadership training and structured community-building activities
  • Support for conferences, networking, and professional development
  • A programme designed to broaden career options and strengthen long-term professional networks

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be UK domiciled
  • Identify as Black African, Black Caribbean, Black Other, or from a mixed background including Black African, Black Caribbean, or Black Other
  • Meet the academic entry requirements for PhD study at the University of Glasgow

Applying for this scholarship does not restrict candidates from applying for other funded PhD opportunities.

Application Timeline

  • 31 January 2026: Deadline for full application submission
  • 9 March 2026: Interview invitations issued and unsuccessful candidates notified
  • 23–27 March 2026: Interviews conducted
  • 10 April 2026: Successful candidates notified

Application Requirements

Research Proposal (up to 1,500 words)
Required for most disciplines (except certain STEM fields). Proposals should be clear and accessible to non-specialists and include:

  • Project title
  • Research overview and key questions
  • Context and positioning within existing literature
  • Methodology
  • Ethical considerations (where applicable)
  • Expected impact and wider relevance

Creative practice-based research proposals are encouraged and may include a supporting portfolio.

Personal Statement (500 words)
Applicants should demonstrate readiness for PhD study by highlighting academic, professional, and life experiences. The statement should reflect motivation, resilience, and alignment with the demands of doctoral research.

Assessment Process

  • Academic supervisors review research proposals and confirm supervisory support
  • Applications are assessed on academic capability and professional/life experience, weighted equally
  • Shortlisted candidates are invited to College-level interviews
